This video describes the many ways that social media changes people and their identities. The speaker goes in depth on how the different types of media, the different affects they have on people, and what these changes in identity may look like. There was an emphasis on new technological developments, and the fact that as long as technology continues to change and grow, so will we because it changes us. The speaker also focused a lot on discourses, or the way we talk with one another, and how the dominant aspects of that have the biggest influence. These aspects are market, pay, and sociality. Sociality shapes our identities by influencing what we post, who we follow, and what kind of content we like and find interesting or entertaining. Market shapes our identities by influencing what product we want to put out there as well as the quality of it, because if we want a product from someone that is of good quality, we will make a product that is of good quality. Pay shapes our identities by influencing what we buy and what where we choose to spend our money.
Social media has influenced me in many ways. I spend a lot of time on apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. Because there are so many who can see what I am posting, I have started to make an effort to post things that I am sure other people will want to like and comment on. There have been times where I have felt as though I did not get “enough” likes on a photo, so I will delete it because I think people do not like it. I have also found many small businesses through social media, which has changed where I spend my money. I have found that many people use social media to advertise their products, and there have been multiple times where I bought from these small businesses because of how they present themselves on social media. I agree with the video and I do believe that social media shapes identity. People are constantly changing because of new trends and new fashion that many people on social media seem to like. They change based on the number of likes and comments they get on their posts, but also from what they are seeing from other people. If they see someone wearing a cute outfit, they will try to find that same outfit. If they see somewhere at a new location that looks like some where they would like to go, they will try to find it and go there. Social media has a big impact on what people do, as well as who they are as a person, their work ethic, and their interests.
